Having a (Fairy Tale) Ball

Not every toddler is lucky enough to have an aunt who is a children's librarian. So not every toddler finds himself joining his aunt for a Fairy Tale Ball at the local library--formal attire, if you please. A live string trio, crafts, a snack, and dozens of lovely princesses reaching for his hand during the dancing...what more could Louis want from a weekend morning?

And though it wasn't quite as magical as watching mice become horses to pull a pumpkin coach, I was still relieved to discover that Louis was able to fit into his Chinese emperor outfit, even with all the yogurt smoothies and noodles and peas and mandarin oranges he's consumed in the past four months. I do think this will probably be the last wearing, though.

One little girl, who was dressed as Ariel, said to her mother, "Look at that little boy! He's all dressed up--and he's so handsome!" With all the children around and stringed instruments on hand (he is fascinated by guitars and violins), let's just say Louis had a ball.

Louis still enjoys wearing his emperor garb, though he is not a fan of posing for pictures lately. Still, we managed to get a few fun ones.

With Aunt Treasa, who dressed up for the event (Treasa is his children's librarian aunt)

Walking the wall outside the library

As you see, Aunt Treasa is both an excellent librarian and a great photographer.

Here the emperor accepts animal crackers from his Grandmom (Baba's mom) on our way to the ball.

He also found time to play with cars and his cousin Molly.

In other photos from the week, here is one of Louis playing with his green hat.

And one of him eating spaghetti and meatballs:

He was excited to see our friend Kate's adorable baby, Julian, and he wanted me to take their picture together:

Here is a photo of Louis riding in the car during our commute. Louis and I spend most of our waking time together in the car each day. We sing a lot, we make funny guttural noises in our throats, we recite books, we look for trucks and buses and yellow cars...it's about as fun as commuting together can be. (Mama would gladly trade the commute for real playtime, but Louis takes it all in stride.) This was a dreadful week for us with terrible traffic a few days in a row. In fact, the traffic was so bad that we were stopped and I could turn around and make sure someone was still smiling in the backseat--which he was. Thank goodness we have such a good-natured little boy!

Just for fun, I'm including two videos. One is of Louis practicing his alphabet, still one of his real passions. Some letters he refuses to say--we're not sure why--and others he prefers to refer to by the words he associates with them. I don't care whether he ever learns Q, but I do tell him that L might be helpful for a boy named Louis. :)

In the other video, Louis is "arguing" with his father over puzzle pieces. They have an ongoing game where Louis calls everything an airplane and John corrects him. This may fall under the "you-had-to-be-there" category, but I do love videos that capture his personality--and his relationship with his Baba.
