Velcro, Zippers, and Other Adventures

As I write this, Louis is sitting in a stroller behind me, throwing a water bottle onto the floor every time I hand it to him and then laughing. Normally I am not so happy to be picking up his thrown items, but he has had a low fever this morning (probably from the six shots he had to get yesterday to satisfy the U.S. government), and I am happy that he is finally back to his jovial self. The Motrin and the juice he drank before shaking it out of the sippy cup onto his newly laundered Thomas the Tank Engine shirt are finally kicking in. We let his Baba take a break to run over to the electronics outlet (not sure that's the right word) this morning, so Louis and I are in the business center, spending 40 yuan per 15 minutes and enjoying each other's company.

Yesterday we introduced Louis to squeaky shoes, which are a marvelous invention. He is quite pleased with himself. We have bought three pairs of shoes here--one intentionally squeaky and one a surprise. He is definitely a shoe guy. He is very proud of his shoes, all of which involve velcro. Velcro and zippers are very big for him, which is fortunate since one of the best toys in the hotel room are the zippers on the luggage.

Louis did well at our medical appointment yesterday morning, only crying through the last four of the six shots--and not screaming nearly as loudly as some of his fellow patients. Don't ask how many of the shots Mama and Baba cried through. It was pretty horrible. But it's over and he has been doing well otherwise. He has slept in the crib in our room two nights now, ending up in our bed by 5 a.m. or so. Yesterday we put him in one of his Chinese outfits, and he had a great time, though he refused to wear the hat for the traditional red couch photo. Actually, he didn't want to sit on the couch either, but he was terrific.

We stopped by the local Catholic church, Our Lady of Lourdes, yesterday, and they were decorating it for Christmas. It was very sparse--the windows have just shutters, no screen or glass. It had a lovely little grotto with coi swimming through it. Louis slept through the visit (he had just had his shots), but we have photos to share with him, and we can only hope he is always that quiet in church.

On Sunday night we went out for German food--surprisingly it was the best meal we've had in China!--and Louis enjoyed the sauerkraut and some meatball appetizer our friends ordered (unfortunately for them). He ate some of the mashed potatoes, but he is not a potato fan, no matter how much his Baba thinks he should like French fries. I wanted to order tiramisu for dessert, just to say that I ate tiramisu at a German restaurant in China, but the children were antsy, and I realized that life with a 2-year-old boy means you don't always get to have dessert. ;)

Speaking of antsy kids, I have one chattering away behind me, so I'm going to try to send a few photos if Louis will wait just a few minutes more. Hope everyone is doing well. We can't wait to see you all soon!
