Six months ago

Six months ago tonight we landed in Chicago to find out that our flight home had been canceled due to a snowstorm on the East Coast. Our forever friends Cherie and Scott who live outside Chicago were just as jetlagged and exhausted and had two children on their hands, but nevertheless helped us find a hotel. We called and reserved a rental car and collapsed--though as I recall Louis woke up wide awake and ready to play just after midnight.

Yesterday we met with our social worker for our six-month post-adoption follow-up. She suggested we meet at a local playground, and Louis and John ran around and played while I tried to answer questions about how Louis eats (almost everything, all the time), how he sleeps (fine as long as we don't read "Llama Llama Red Pajama"), whether he does anything peculiar (I didn't think so, but when I mentioned his love for pickled beets, she definitely made a note of that), and whether we love him as much as we expected (Yes! Yes! Yes! And then a whole lot more!).

During the interview Louis explored the playground:

And put his Baba to work:
And I tried to explain to our social worker how easily Louis has fit into our lives.

He checks the mail...
...waters the plants...
...loves watching videos of himself with Baba...

...loves to read (here is with Grandmom)...

...and thinks his cousins are the most fun people on earth (here he is with his cousin Molly).

And, even though he doesn't like new experiences at first, he will try almost anything. When we went to his cousin Emily's graduation party this afternoon, Louis got his first taste of a wading pool. He was hesitant at first and then decided it was loads of fun.

It's hard to believe it was just six months ago there was too much snow here for us to land a plane to come home and today we were all slinking into the shade to get cool. Time flies when you're having fun with Louis.

Is Louis having fun? Well...let's just say his bread is buttered. Tonight his Grandmom whipped up an orange sorbet drink and had his Aunt Mary deliver it to him poolside?

Oh, the life of the youngest grandchild (on Baba's side). Let's hope he doesn't expect this kind of service at home this summer.

  2. It's dangerous, isn't it? Luckily Louis actually prefers to do things for himself, so I think we're OK. Happy one year to you! Ewen is a great kid too and Louis is lucky to have him as a friend!

  4. Jen, I can't believe we've been home six months! And yet it also feels like we've known Louis forever. I'm sure you feel the same way about your sweet little girl. I'm so glad we can stay in touch through our blogs.
