Baby, it's hot outside

It's hot.

90-some degrees.

And it's not even July.

Fake pouting around the house in the air conditioning is only so exciting. So Baba got out the sprinkler.

Louis yelled, "Rain!" Then he alternated between yelling "Wheeeeee!" and "Oh, no!" as he ran quickly toward the water and then away from it--just as fast.

We installed an above-ground pool.

Louis thought the water was too cold.

Then he found Mama's chair by the side of the pool--complete with a bottle of water.

That was just right.

Then, after a healthy dinner, of course, since Louis does like his noodles and vegetables, we went to our local snowball/ice cream stand, where last week we discovered that Louis is more of a fan of ice cream than crushed, flavored ice.

This time, Louis asked for ice again and again. We ordered three ice creams instead.

First he tried Mama's.

It was too chocolatey.

Then he tried his own--vanilla with chocolate jimmies.

He tasted cautiously, somewhat satisfied but unsure.

Then he tried Baba's.


Maybe just one more taste, Baba...?

Moments later, Baba was eating the child-sized ice cream.


And Louis? Oh, he was content to give a cheese smile for the camera, as long as that cone was firmly in his hand.

He clinked cones with Mama to say "cheers," one of his favorite mealtime exchanges.

Then this son of ours who insists on having his hands wiped off when they get dirty during meals paid no attention to the vanilla cream dripping down his hand, his wrist, his arm, and onto his legs.

If Baba wanted his cone back, he didn't say so.

Baba just went to get water and napkins in case we planned to climb back in the car to go home.


After all, cooling down on a hot day is serious business.
