R-A-I-S-I-N-S
When I found myself spelling "raisins" to John the other night, I knew we had moved past the time when we could safely say anything around Louis. Yesterday I made a comment about his bear slippers, which he had owned for a matter of hours, and he knew what I meant and wouldn't calm down until I handed them to him. We now have to come to grips with the fact that he understands everything we say!
So far the words Louis says include hi, hello, bye-bye, hot, yeah, yellow, uh-oh, no (and no, no), Elmo, moo, who (for an owl), pop (when the Jack in the Box opens), boom, here (when handing something to someone), and boo (as in Peek-a...). And he says Mama and Baba, of course. Then there is debate over whether he says several words such as "choo-choo," "woof," and "grr" for a bear. I'm not counting words as part of his vocabulary until we hear them more regularly. He also says something for car and truck, but not with any consistency, so I think we'll wait to list that. And for trains he makes a chugga-type noise, but it's not really a word, although it's cute and makes Baba so happy.
It was funny that I thought maybe he didn't know what yellow referred to (though he loved saying it), and I told John as much. Then last night when we were reading together, Louis started pointing out everything that was yellow. So Mama was wrong and Louis knows exactly what yellow means.
Part of the fun in all of this is that we don't know which words Louis knew in Chinese and he now knows in English and which are entirely new to his vocabulary. We have no way of knowing whether he knew colors in Chinese or whether identifying colors is entirely new and different to him.
I wish we had a good video of Louis talking in his own Chinese-English combo, but I haven't managed to capture that. What I can offer is a video of Louis saying bye-bye to trains as he watches a train video with his Baba--and some fun photos from the past few days. I have a feeling only parents would think this video is completely adorable, but I'm including it anyway. We love hearing Louis speak. :)

LOVE the video. And did he say "train" in that video? It sounded like it. I love the sideways glance that he gives; too cute!
ReplyDeleteI don't think Ewen knew his colors before we got him. He would never consistently name colors for several months (except for orange.) But he did know that it was not "one, two, three" but "ee, er, san." He was very adamant about that!
Do you think he said "train"? Really? This is an ongoing discussion around here. We are sure it will be one of his first words and John thinks he says something for train, but we're not sure. I'll tell him you said so, and maybe that will be confirmation enough. That's so cute that Ewen knew how to count in Chinese. I don't think Louis knows how to count in either language, but he knows you're supposed to say something for each thing, so he pretends. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat video! I don't know...I can't imagine anyone (even non-parents) not thinking this is CUTE! I am loving reading all your posts and seeing how much Louis is changing in the short time he has been with you guys!
ReplyDeleteBTW...I may have to make a trip to Old Navy. $2 really! The slippers are too cute.
It's fun to know others enjoy the video. I thought John and I were the only ones who would like it! :) Louis picked out the slippers himself. Old Navy was having an insane clearance sale on winter stuff, and I really couldn't say no.
ReplyDeleteI hope the bear slippers come in my size!
ReplyDeleteWhat a precious little guy...he makes me smile.
