Days before Christmas
'Tis just days before Christmas, the presents are wrapped,
And this new fan of Santa is fairly well-napped.

The stockings we've found and the wreath's on the door,

We've met Christmas llamas and smelled some manure.
Still, he much prefers cows he can hold in his hands,
And he likes best the kings from their far distant lands.

He knows where to place God so tender and mild,

But it's not Christmas morning for this little child

So we gently and quietly tucked Him away

And He'll move to the stable quite soon--Saturday!
That day seems far off for our 3-year-old boy
Who is ready to burst with his seasonal joy.

And amidst all the packages, boxes, and bags,

Was thrilled to find one with his name on the tags.
(For our gifts and Santa's, he'll just have to wait,
But if friends shipped their gifts to him early--that's great!)

Advent in our house is chock full of trains.

As we blow whistles loudly and call them by name,

"A gray diesel engine!" "Whoo-whoo," says the steam,

Our countdown to Christmas? A train lover's dream.

We've added some life to our fake Christmas tree

When the Cat in the Hat saw, he called out, "It's me!"

But there also are pickles and mushrooms and trains
And angels, crustaceans, some birds, and airplanes.
What's our son's favorite? We're not quite keeping score,

And, besides, he is usually down on the floor.
At times he may pause for a quick bite to eat,
A piece of a friend's birthday cake's a real treat!
As you may recall, our boy's not into cake,
But handfuls of candy he's happy to take.
More rapid than eagles, he flew to the treats.
Who needs sugarplums with a jar full of sweets?
One way or another, he'll come out all right,
And he's sure to sleep well in his bed Christmas night!

Merry Christmas!
