Shoes and Shamrocks

Why didn't our parenting class cover shoe shopping? On our first full day with Louis, we went to a Walmart in Changsha to buy a pair of shoes. They had cows on them, Louis liked them, we liked them, they cost about $4, and we all left the store happy. I thought we were done with shoe shopping for a while. When I noticed that the shoes weren't sliding on quite as easily, I took Louis to have his feet measured. His shoes were two sizes too small! Eek. So much for our $4 pair of shoes. Louis is happy with his new shoes, but he can't get them off as easily, which is a little frustrating for a child who likes to remove his shoes and socks as soon as the car starts moving. Luckily all we have to do is sing a few more verses of one of his favorite songs, "Old MacDonald" or "Bingo," and all is right in the world.

Let's hope these shoes last at least a few months! Here Louis is wearing them while playing with a shamrock balloon. St. Patrick's Day is at least as big a deal as Christmas at my parents' house:

Yesterday we bought a green hat for Louis. I have been trying completely unsuccessfully to get a good photo of him in it. He is having a great time thwarting my attempts:

I finally managed to take one where he gave me a cute--but very cheesy--smile. :)

Yesterday we also went to a local nature center with our friend Charlie and his mom, Katie. The boys had the place to themselves. Louis said "bee" without any prompting when he saw the bees in the hive, and he hissed for the snakes. Sometimes I'm not sure where he has picked things up.

We even saw a school bus in the parking lot. Louis loves anything that moves, and he yells out "buh" whenever he sees a bus. He also points out anything yellow, so school buses are especially exciting.

Right now the colors Louis says most clearly are "yellow," "orange," and "purple." But he recognizes all the basic colors, and he says so many, many words that I am having trouble keeping track of them. Last night I said to John, "Louis knows a new word! He says 'bridge' now!" And John said (very kindly, of course), "Oh, he has been saying that for weeks." Louis is also saying "alleluia," so he will be ready for Easter, and he says a lot of words that I don't understand but can tell are English. His vocabulary is growing and so is Louis. It's amazing to see how much he has changed in just a few short months.

What is especially interesting to me is that Louis still hasn't lost all his Chinese. He uses the English and Chinese words for dog interchangeably and he still says something that sounds to us like "in de ba," which he has been saying since we met him in China. He always smiles when he says it, so it must be something fun either in Chinese or in his own Louis language--we just don't know what it means! Here he is saying "in de ba" over and over again.

And here is Louis during our hat-wearing photo shoot.

  1. Love the videos and new pics! So does Isabel...she kept saying "Louis again" so she could keep seeing the videos of Louis. Good luck with your return to work Rita! At least you know he is in good hands, but I know it's still hard!! :)
